CHAPTER SIX

ALL the way back to Orlando airport, Fabian’s mood stayed the same. As they drove across Florida, Clare attempted to make light-hearted conversation but Fabian remained quiet and preoccupied. Then, out of the blue, his mood changed and he smiled at her for the first time that day. But it was a smile that had no warmth.

‘Do you think there’s the slightest chance you might be pregnant?’ he asked after they’d stopped for petrol.

His question took her completely off guard.

‘I’m not sure,’ she said. Then, after giving it more thought, added, ‘It’s most unlikely. As you know, I’m on the Pill, but these things do happen—nothing’s one hundred per cent guaranteed.’

‘When will you know?’ he asked, a nagging persistence entering his voice.

‘In ten days’ time,’ she replied, ‘but does it matter? We’re getting married and I would imagine we’d hope to have children at some time in the future. If they come sooner rather than later, then so be it.’

She snuggled up to him, happy that he appeared to be coming out of his gloominess. But what he said next sent a chill through her.

‘I’m not sure that I do want children,’ he replied, starting the engine and heading for the highway.

Clare was open-mouthed.

‘That’s not what you said earlier!’ she protested. ‘You said you wanted children to take to Disney World. At least that’s what I thought you meant. Don’t you remember, I asked you if you wanted to borrow some children and you said you didn’t believe in borrowing anything?’

She turned to face him but he was looking straight ahead at the road. He said nothing.

‘Don’t you remember saying that?’ she persisted.

Fabian shrugged.

‘Lord, you can be so infuriating!’ She switched on the car radio, roughly punching the buttons until she found a station with some suitably loud music to match her furious mood. But after ten minutes she switched it off again.

‘This is important, you know!’ she said between clenched teeth. ‘It’s a very important part of a relationship to me. I love children… I love babies. If we’re going to get married I have to know if you want to have children or not.’

‘I’ve just told you,’ he said, his voice level and calm, ‘that I’m not sure about wanting children. In fact I’ll put it even more clearly, I am sure about it. Absolutely certain. I don’t want any.’

Clare began to feel sick. How could she have been so wrong about Fabian? She’d believed they were soul-mates, with the same values in life. She couldn’t imagine marrying anyone who didn’t want children. Of course, not being able to have children was a different matter. There was always the possibility that for some reason or other they never would have children of their own. As she said earlier—nothing was one hundred per cent guaranteed. But to set out right from the start not to have a family went totally against her nature.

For several miles she was silent—speechless, really. She just didn’t know how to handle the situation.
